"Describe yourself in three words" sounds simple, but most people freeze and say "hardworking, passionate, team player". Those words could describe anyone. The interviewer is looking for self-awareness and fit: do you know what you're like, and do those qualities suit the job? A good answer picks three specific, true words and backs each one up with a quick example.
What the interviewer is checking
- Self-awareness. Can you describe yourself accurately?
- Fit. Do the qualities match what the role needs?
- Thinking on your feet. Can you answer clearly in a few seconds?
- Honesty. Do the words match the rest of your answers?
How to choose your three words
- Read the job post. Note the qualities it stresses: "detail-oriented", "works independently", "customer focus".
- Pick three that are true for you. If you can't think of an example, it's the wrong word.
- Cover different sides of you. One about how you work, one about people, one about how you think.
- Prefer specific words. "Resourceful" says more than "good".
The structure
Say the three words, then one sentence of proof for each.
Example: "Organized, patient and curious. Organized because I run the scheduling for a team of twelve and haven't had a double-booking in a year. Patient because I'm the one my team sends the trickiest customer calls to. And curious, because I always want to know why a problem happened, not just how to fix it."

- Funny, chill, laid-back. Fine in some casual workplaces, but risky in most interviews.
- Words that contradict the job. "Independent" for a highly collaborative role, or "spontaneous" for compliance work.
Sample answers
Software engineer
"Curious, methodical and collaborative. I like understanding how systems work under the hood, I debug step by step instead of guessing, and I enjoy pairing with teammates to solve problems faster."
Customer service
"Patient, positive and resourceful. I stay calm when customers are upset, I keep a good mood on busy shifts, and I usually find a workaround when the standard fix doesn't apply."
Project manager
"Organized, decisive and diplomatic. I keep timelines and owners clear, I make calls when the team is stuck, and I can usually get two departments with different priorities to agree."
Teacher
"Encouraging, prepared and adaptable. I make students feel they can improve, I plan lessons well in advance, and I change the plan when it isn't working for the class in front of me."
Entry level
"Quick learner, reliable and curious. In my internship I picked up our database tool in a week, I never missed a deadline, and I asked a lot of questions, which my manager said she appreciated."
Sales
"Persistent, honest and observant. I follow up until I get a clear answer, I don't promise what we can't deliver, and I pay attention to what customers say they need."
Variations
| Question | How to adjust |
|---|---|
| How would your friends describe you? | Use more personal words, still relevant to work |
| How would your manager describe you? | Use words from real feedback or reviews |
| Describe yourself in one word | Pick the one most important for the job, with an example |
| What makes you unique? | Combine two of your words into an unusual pairing |
| Tell me about yourself | A longer answer; see our guide to tell me about yourself |
How to prepare
- Write down ten words that describe you.
- Circle the ones the job post would value.
- Pick three from different categories.
- Write one example sentence for each.
- Say it aloud in under 45 seconds.
Check that your words match your other answers, such as what motivates you and your preferred work environment. If you say "independent" here and "I love constant teamwork" later, the interviewer will notice.
